I recently got some fun new American Crafts paper and embellishments. I loved the bright colors in them, perfect to brighten up the winter blues here!

The line is called 'Teen', but as you can see here it can be used for so much MORE then that. I used the patterned paper (my fav is the crowns, they are glittered!), the Flair, the ribbon, and the journaling stickers all from that line. Mixed in some older Thickers and I was set.

So...here's what I made:

I'm strictly and 8.5x11 scrapper, but as you can see I like to mix it up and do landscape layouts too. I just add them all in the same album and don't care if they match up or not! lol!

Anyways, I'd love to see what you've all done recently!

Working Hard On Valentine's Day Themed Stuff

Hey There,

If you've been in any of the craft stores lately you will know that they already have the Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's displays and supplies everywhere!

One of my New Years resolutions for 2009 is to start on my projects early enough to actually enjoy the holiday or occasion. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely enjoy the process of gathering ideas, designing and creating my projects, actually most of the time creating truly relaxes me, but sometimes if I haven't finished said gift or project I find myself losing the joy that the gift of creativity brings!

it's been WAY TOO long since my last post and so sorry for the neglect. the Shop has been in limbo and in the works of updates.

Since I am often asked how I come up with my layouts/projects I've decided to share the "Layout Design Plan" form that I've created and use on a regular basis. This form not only helps me create, but also repeat favorite layout designs without stress. The form has room for:
1) layout type
2) inspiration (theme or content)
3) picture
4) journaling note
5) embellishments
6) start & completion dates
7) duration to complete the layout/project
8) cardstock/paper line or manufacturer
9) room for 1" x 1" swatches
10) and a sketch

Product Spotlight: Stickles

I LOVE Stickles! They are GREAT for accenting. They add just enough texture/interest and bling. They come in SO many different colors, but I only use one (stardust) because I can add it over ANY color and it just adds some glitter interest, letting the original color show through.

Anyways, here's a few examples of them in action. On the first I 'stickled' a snowflake that I cut out from a patterned paper (and then I added a ghost snowflake over the top of it) and on the second I traced a pattern in the patterned paper to accent it with glitter.

I got this GREAT kit from ScrappersXchange! This line is PERFECT for scrapping pics of my girls. Once I pulled the kit out I had this layout done in less then 20 minutes, and I love it. I've had this picture sitting around for 2 years waiting for the right paper -- and this was it!

Technique: using diecuts to add interest!

Ok, if you know me, you know that i tend to be a scrappy "over-doer." I don't like simple layouts. (at least not when I make them, i like other's simple layouts!!) I don't like simple sketches, i like ELABORATE! Sometimes that's fine, but sometimes you just want to make a few layouts quickly! One of my new favorites for being able to make quickie layouts that are interesting is using die cuts. Hello . . .

My name is Letty and I am the newest member of the design team here at ScrappersXchange. I am so honored to be here and thought I'd show you the few projects I came up with using a Scenic Route Kraft Kit given to me by scrappx.

To tell you the truth I had no experience working with Kraft papers prior to this kit and frankly at first sight they weren't really my style, but I am the type of scrapper that won't let myself get bogged down or waste time worrying about what to do next with a project. I scrap to relax, not stress out. It took me a little time, but I decided to just start creating with a few photos I had of my wonderful 2 1/2 year old granddaughter.

extractor tool- digi pages :)

yup- fallen off the boat today with digi scrappin' :)

here's a page using the extractor tool! COOLIO tool that extracts what you want from an image... in this instance, the bag and kitten were taken out of the picture and pasted to the patterned paper.

my steps in pse6:
- go to image/extractor
(there are actually directions on what to do!)
- select the foreground brush and click a few times in areas you want to keep
(by default, the foreground brush is selected- the brush with the + sign- i suggest clicking the corners and a few in the center of what you want to keep)
- select the background brush and click a few times in areas you DON'T want to keep
(background brush is the brush with the - sign)
- click preview and you'll see your selection!
- in preview, you'll have the option to use the eraser tool- there may be some specks to erase
- when finished, click ok

JOILA- you've extracted from your image... this is SO MUCH EASIER than before this tool came out! before, you'd have to 'select' what you wanted, inverse the selection, and delete... with the extractor, it does ALL that work for you! LOVE IT!!!

yes, went a little overboard today with pages and LOVING IT! don't think i've scrapped this much in a long while... though they're simple pages, i'm just happy to get them scrapped :)

so with these pages, the the lined paper had the elements on them as well as individual elements in the kit. to to tuck the pictures under the elements, i copied the individual 'noted' and apple items to the page as layers above the pictures... and of course, they fit perfectly over the original items since they're from the same kit!

the alphabets were also included and simply copied and pasted to add '2008' under the 'school days' title.

there's definitely much to do with digi- hope these 'tips' are getting you into digi, at least a little curious? lol... hope this helps- ENJOY :)

created these pages this morning- WOW, 4 pages in a day??? actually 6 (will post soon)! lol- just loving digi scrapping...

AND, these pages were quick- why??? simply because i copied the layers from one 2page layout to another patterned paper! YES- make different duplicate pages in a jiffy! this is definitely where digi scrapping comes in handy for the upcoming holidays! and hello??? i simply flipped the one patterned paper to make the 2nd page!!!

my steps in pse6:
- created the pages using layers for each element
ie: 'livin on the edge' title, green star, filmstrip, pictures, border strips
- in the layers palette, select all the layers EXCEPT the background
(background should be the patterned paper)
- open up new patterned paper
(make sure it's the same size as your current page)
- copy the selected layers to the new patterned paper
(if able, simply drag elements to the new paper- HOWEVER, copying to the new paper will place the elements EXACTLY as they are positioned on the original... how cool is that???)

joila- you've got a 'new' page! and just do the following for the 2nd layout (remember to flip horizontally the 2nd paper so that it mirrors the 1st) and you're done... can you imagine doing this for one album and then recreating new albums with different papers??? it'll be a snap to get out 'different' gift albums for family and friends.

Hey all!! I'd love to get some discussion going on here, and i'm offering a RAK from me which i will award to a random participant in this easy challenge! Please play along! i don't want to win my own RAK! LOL!!

Please post what would constitute the perfect kit. How much would it cost? what would be included, how many patterned papers, how many cardstock, how much embellies and what kind?

I'll start! My perfect kit has LOTS OF STUFF and is CHEAP! LOL!! specifically around $30-35 including shipping, I don't like smaller kits because shipping increases the cost too much. I like a variety of coordinating patterned papers... i like specialty cardstock, like shapes and Core-dinations, but don't really care if there's cardstock otherwise because i have a great stash. Oh i love black, white and Kraft CS, never can have too much of that! My dream kit has to have at LEAST one alpha set, ideally 2, can include coordinating die cuts, tags, etc. but doesn't have to. I love flowers and buttons, and other bumpy stuff, not bing on metal so much other than brads and eyelets. I LOVE LOVE LOVE vintage goodies and cool eclectic stuff from etsy!

I can't post on my blog because he READS my blog, LOL! so I thought i'd post here... I used some leftovers from my scrappersXchange kit and also some leftovers i had from a previous kit. It is AMAZING how tiny scraps you can use when making a minibook! I recommend that you keep ALL your scraps with whatever kit you buy them with becuase you NEVER know when you might have use for that 1/2 inch by 4 inch strip of paper! LOL! seriously though, minibooks are a great way to use stash, and they make a great gift! I'm making ALL our gifts this year and this is what i'm making for our out of town relatives.

ok, so for this minibook, i used the grafton and providence lines of Scenic Route paper, along with the embellishments that go with them and a few from my stash, notably a LOT of Heidi Swapp Bling, and almost a full pack of Kaiser rubons. I unified the book by using the same kind of pp throughout, and the black rubons throughout and embellishment clusters on each page. (or almost.)

yes, i'm really getting back into my digital work and LOVE IT!

this wallpaper was from real simple (subscribed to their daily thought and starts my day off)

this wallpaper was done in pse:
- open wallpaper
- open the picture you want to add
- select a portion of the picture (used eliptical for this one)
- copy/paste to wallpaper
- sized it down to fit in the frame
TEXT
- used the eyedropper to match the elements of the wallpaper
- typed up my text
- used the curve feature (tweaked it til it fit just right)
saved the wallpaper file for web and renamed it (renaming will create a new file so original file will not be affected)

went to my computer wallpaper setup and JOILA- a customized wallpaper with a photo of my kiddies :)

try this out and would love to see what you come up with!

Technique: Using sketches for variety

I found this amazing sketch on another site and wanted to share it with you, and share a few different ways i interpreted it. First the sketch I found here http://lgoldhawk.blogspot.com/ I immediately was drawn to it, and made several layouts of it. One thing to keep in mind is that when i made these layouts, i didn't even make any major alterations. You could just as easily flip the sketch upside down, or to one side, or whatever! Sketches are so flexible and fun!

And here are the layouts I made using this sketch.

Digiscrapping tips...

Digiscrapping is definitely making its mark in scrapbooking- and why not??? Who wouldn’t love to customize and reuse elements or never run out of alphabets??? Nope, haven’t given up traditional- LOVE to get my hands dirty… but for quick pages or projects to share, this is definitely the route to go!

First off- if you’re a newbie, DON’T buy digital goodies… there are TONS of freebies out there! Just to name a few… shabbyprincess.com, twopeaseinabucket, and designerdigitals.com, and for fonts, kevinandamanda.com Just like scrapbook goodies, digi goodies also add up! Try working with freebie kits as they are PACKED with papers, embellishments, alphabets, etc… you won’t be at a loss of goodies. AND, they are cute! Not junkie just cause they’re free…

Digi organizing tips…
- create a folder for you digi stuff (keep all your digi stuff in this main folder)
- create a folder of the site/designer and keep all downloads from the site/designer in the folder
- download the terms of use (tou) so you know the limitations of how you can use the digital designs… MOST are for personal use only, while some allow commercial use with limits (sales using designs, use on a commercial site, etc…) **each designer has their own tou as well, so would keep that within the folder for the designer
- keep the kits in their own folders within the site folders
- download the image of the kits in the site folder for a quick look **I also suggest a copy in the respective kit folders for a quick look of the elements
- keep zip files of kits in a ‘zip files’ folder **rename zip files if necessary, ie: pea- adore

**if you have it- keep a copy of digi stuff folder in an external harddrive OR even a thumdrive to keep it handy**

my step-by-step for KIT downloading… (site/designer folder already created with tou)
- download the zip files for the kits
- download the image for the kits
**rename the items by kit if necessary- should the name be a number, suggest adding the actual kit name to the end of the current name to correspond with the zip files**
- unzip the kits (new folder is created and name the folder with the kit name)
- copy/paste the kit image into the kit folder
- cut/paste kit folder and kit image into site folder

**keep personal and commercial kits/elements separate…
will help to know what’s what when creating your project**

for more indepth organization… create folders for individual elements, ie: brushes, stamps, overlays, papers, buttons, metals, ribbon, etc… just as you would organize your scrappy goodies, you want to know what digi goodies you have! you can even further categorize within the ‘main’ folder by color, shape, etc…

hope these tips helps! The next step is viewing all these new digi goodies… ENJOY :)

k- FINALLY got to sit down and make a digipage... VERY simple page and VERY easy to make!!!

i'm so motivated and inspired to get more digipages done- brings me back to when i downsized to 8x8 :) it's just that instant gratification of getting the page done that i definitely will continue digiscrapping and FINALLY put my large format printer to use and get some more 12x12 albums filled!

what's nice about digi is that you can customize the elements and use it over and over and over again!!! so maybe, this will help me release a bit with my scrappy goodies hoarding problem...

i'll definitely be posting more :)

Turning magnets into cute embellishments

Since having a little boy (who's now a TODDLER!!!) I've been on the hunt for cute, BOY embellishments (I can NOT bring myself to use the ever popular flowers on his pages!!!). I was browsing Target yesterday and found these really cute magnets for only $1! They reminded me of those really expensive rubber embellishments. When I saw them in the store I wondered if you could remove the magnet and use them for my pages. So, I bought them just to see. It turned out to be easier then I thought! Also, as a warning, I don't care much about the acid free-ness of these -- but if you are, well...then you might be better off using these on your fridge!!

Step 1 - Get your magnets. See, aren't these cute?

Step 2 - Remove magnets and inspect the back of them. These just had a layer of magnet on the back. Looks easy to remove!

Step 3 - I stuck my fingernail under the magnet part and peeled it up. Easy!!

Step 4 - Remove the magnet completely. My magnet didn't leave ANY stickiness on the back of the rubber, but if it does I'm sure a baby wipe would clean it up nicely.

Step 5 - Here's the little 'embellishment' ready to use on your page. I plan on just using glue dots to stick mine to my pages! Now I have some really cute, BOYISH embellishments to use on my next page for Trevor!!

Printed Kraft paper

Ok, this is just a small tidbit, but I thought i'd share in case anyone else might benefit... Do you ever end up with kraft paper that's printed, and not really your style, or just doesn't match well with what you'd like to do with it? I have discovered that if you have a printed Kraft paper, say by Scenic Route, the flip side of the paper looks the same as the front. So instead of letting that baby sit around and collect dust you can use it for pretty much ANYTHING! And Kraft paper is so fun and versatile, and just makes colors pop right off the page!!

These have been fun to work with. I love both the flocking and glittering results that I've gotten. Great, even coverage, and it was SUPER EASY!

Kit creation #3!

here's another! its a journal. Thought i'd throw in an altered item to change it up a bit.
I cut out the surf boards from the strip patterned paper, and arranged them to form a flower. I also smashed the bottle cap with a hammer, which was easy and really effective!
I was excited to find in an old poetry book a poem that is actually ABOUT gratitude, which is the subject of my journal. One thing that i discovered is that when dealing with an old brittle book, it is really easy to tear the pages, so keep the distressing to a minimum!

I loved working on this layout. I remember when i took these pictures. I was trying really hard to capture Leif completely COVERED in sand. This Scenic Route line was PERFECT for what i was hoping to capture, that being Leif's brute manliness. :-)

Technique: Using Adhesive Rub-ons

Here's a step by step tutorial on using the We R Memory Keepers Adhesive Rub-ons with Glitter :)

These are VERY fun and easy to use. WAY easier then using the loose glitter (and WAY WAY less messy!!).

Step 1 - Choose your letters and cut them out of the backing sheet

Step 2 - Place your letters on the paper and rub them as you normally would do any other rub-ons (make sure they are COMPLETELY transferred because if they aren't the glue will stretch (but these rub-on easily, it shouldn't be a problem)). Remove the backing sheet but BE CAREFUL NOT TO LET ANYTHING TOUCH THE RUB-ONS (they are sticky!!!)

Step 3 - Choose your 'topping' (Foil, Flocking, or Glitter). I chose glitter.

Step 4 - Place your topping sheet over the rub-ons that you already rubbed-on and rub-on again.

Step 5 - Enjoy! These are VERY easy and virtually NO MESS!!

Technique: Stamping on flowers

I discovered this fun technique this week, and sadly i do NOT remember WHERE i found it, but anyway, the technique is stamping on a flower. I used one of those giant Heidi swapp flowers. its layered over a metal frame and crate paper brand paper, to make a trifold card. I think this technique is pretty failsafe... just stamp all over it! fun stuff :-)

Scrap-therapy

I love scrapping for so many reasons... primarily there is the artistic aspect and the historical record that i'm providing for my posterity, but scrapping can also fulfill a more direct, emotional need in the here and now! Scrapping for me is also very therapeutic. When i lost a baby to miscarriage this summer i was able to put my thoughts and feelings to paper in poem form and then scrap them. It was a HUGE jump in the healing process for me. Perhaps you aren't comfortable scrapping MAJOR events that are traumatic for you. Perhaps a smaller even feels more appropriate? This is a layout i did to help my son Nikolas when he had to pitch his FAVORITE shirt, the one he'd grown super attached to (and it showed from the condition it was in!!!) I made a deal with him. If we could throw the shirt away, i'd cut a strip of the fabric and all the remaining buttons and make a page for his book. So while he couldn't keep his shirt to wear, he'd have it forever in his scrapbook. To my surprise he eagerly agreed! so here's the page I made for him.

Do you have any examples to share of therapeutic scrapping you have done? Anything that has helped ease your mind or that of a loved one counts! I'd love to see any examples!! in fact, i'll do a drawing on October 15th, mine and dh's 14th anniversary, woohoo! for a rak if anyone would like to make a therapeutic layout/project and share!!! Please have that posted by October 14th!

I'm Jennifer. Pretty sure most of you knew that already though. I've been working with Viv here at SX for quite a while now...since June-ish of '06 :) Eeek, has it REALLY been that long? lol!

I've been scrapbooking since my first daughter was just a baby, back in 2002. I quickly became addicted :) I've ALWAYS scrapped 8.5x11, since my very first page. I've done only a handful of 12x12 pages, and they were for other people, not for me. I prefer 8.5x11 for several reasons, but the main one is that it is a easier album size for my little ones to handle :)

I've been published in multiple scrapbooking magazines and scrapbook idea books. :)

I live in the beautiful state of Washington. I love it here. Growing up in Southern California, moving up here sure was a difference, but now I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love living in a little city, where all the neighbors know each other. I love being able to let my kids play outside and not having to worry about anything happening to them. And heck, if I want 'busy', Portland (OR) is less then 1/2 an hour from me!

I just LOVE the Halloween line the Teresa Collins did, it's great! I love the paper with the circles the most, and I can't wait to punch/cut them out and have fun with them!

got these mirror frames from ikea a while ago (LONG while ago :) and just finally painted them to match up our bedroom...

it's not completed quite yet (let's see how much longer it takes me) but was looking to add some vinyl to it and dress it up... recently got graphically speaking for my cricut and excited to put it to use. hubby picked priceless, me & you, and life is good- those are just some of the sayings on this COOLIO cartridge... and it does jumble too!

will post again when complete- hoping to get some play time in this week :)

Hello Everyone!!! My name is Rebecca, and I am so pleased and honored to be on the ScrappersXchange Design Team! I have been a subscriber about a year now and absolutely LOVE Vivien's kits, and know that you all will too. Her kits are the perfect culmination of style and creativity and are budget conscious as well.

A bit about me. I am a Stay at home, homeschooling mom of 5 so far. I love my family, and love to record our memories. I occasionally freelance write in the homeschool community as the opportunity arises. I scrap for that reason but also because i'm an artistic person and crave that creative outlet. My other hobbies include reading, sewing, singing, acting, and other creative endeavors. I also strangely enjoy organizing my scrap area.

I am working on a number of albums of my own right now. I have a series of family albums, which is our chronologically organized activities. I also have a heritage album, which contains both older and newer family treasures. I have a wedding/marriage album, a month in review album series with 2 years so far, and my Book of me. Each of my children has their own series of albums as well that i constantly work on, which is why you might see several layouts of mine that look similar. Scrapping is my passion, and i strive to continually improve my artistic skills as well as my interpersonal, communicative and writing skills.

I have served on other design teams, both term ones and guest designing. And i currently also design for Lucy Chesna's challenge blog So Tell Me Your Story

I'm thrilled to be on the team and look forward to working with Vivien's awesome kits and hopefully inspiring you all with challenges and sketches. Let's SCRAP!!!

tidBit- cricut tip...

do you love your cricut? use it often or alot??? sure you've gone through some of the cutting mats by now- but here's a tip for you!

heard of wacky tack? it's a GREAT repositionable adhesive that will solve your cricut mat replacement and put it to a complete stop!

this little bottle is going to be THE answer for saving $$$ on cutting mats... apply as directed- i simply just swipe a thin layer with the dabber topped adhesive to the mat, spread it out a bit with the wacky widget (comes with the product), and wait a bit to dry (it's a quick dry adhesive) and JOILA! it's a rejuvenated cutting mat with a tack that LASTS LONGER than when you first bought it!

get a bottle and see for yourself- it's great for making sticky notes, other repositionable goodies, AND for your scrapbook projects. should you be one that tends to rearrange a layout after adhering, this little puppy will NOT ruin your projects and once placed will NOT come off until you take it off! AND the bottle lasts forever- LOVE it!
